Mt. Manaslu Expedition (8163 m)

Overview

Mt. Manaslu is previously known as Kutang which means flat place in Tibetan word, describing the mountain's general summit. Situated in western Nepal in the Mansiri Himalayan range, Mt Manaslu 8,163 m (26,758 ft) is one of the coveted 8000 m peaks and worlds 8th highest ones. Manaslu (8163 m) is the highest peak in the Gurkha massif and is located about forty miles east of Annapurna I (the 10th highest mountain of 8000 m.). The mountain's long ridges and valley glaciers offer feasible approaches from all directions, and culminate in a peak that towers steeply above its surrounding landscape, and is a dominant feature when viewed from afar.

Manaslu was first climbed on May 9, 1956 by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition. It was attempted by Japanese Expeditions every year from 1952 until 1956 when the first ascent was made. The Japanese continued to dominate the climbing scene of Manaslu with second ascent in 1971. In 1997 Charlie Mace made the first American ascent on the mountain. There are a half dozen established routes on the mountain today. The south face of the mountain being arguably the toughest in climbing history makes it the 4th most dangerous 8000 m peak, behind Annapurna I, Nanga Parbat, and K2. Therefore, climbers need extensive experience of climbing before taking to the slopes of Manaslu. This expedition presents a real opportunity for climbers to perform in the world of 8000m with reliable leadership that enables you to focus on the climbing.
